Privacy Policy
Effective date: April 4, 2026
Proximitii ("we", "us", "our") is a location-based social app that helps you discover connections with friends in the real world. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, how we protect it, and what choices you have.
By using Proximitii, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy.
1. Information We Collect
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect:
- Phone number — used for authentication via one-time passcode (OTP)
- Name and username — displayed to your friends within the app
- Email address — used for account recovery and important notifications
- Profile photo — optional avatar visible to your friends
Location Data
Location data is central to how Proximitii works. We collect:
- Background location — With your permission, we track your location in the background using GPS, significant location changes, and visit detection. This enables features like nearby friends, encounter detection, and location history.
- Location history — We store your location data over time to build your personal location history and detect encounters with friends.
- Location sessions — We cluster your raw GPS data into visits (places you stayed at) with arrival/departure times.
- Activity data — We use device motion sensors to detect whether you are walking, driving, or stationary. This helps optimize location tracking for battery efficiency. We do not store raw motion sensor data.
Content You Create
- Drops — Location-based posts including text, photos, and videos you create
- Connections — Shared memory spaces with friends, including photos, videos, comments, and timeline events
- Comments and reactions — Your interactions with others' content
Social Data
- Friend list — Users you have connected with as friends
- Sharing preferences — Your visibility settings and per-friend sharing levels
- Contact information — During onboarding, you may optionally allow us to match your phone contacts to find existing Proximitii users. We do not store your full contacts list.
Photo Library Metadata
You may optionally import location metadata (GPS coordinates and timestamps) from your photo library to enrich your location history. We import only the location and date metadata — we do not upload or access your actual photos through this feature.
Device Information
- Push notification token — To deliver notifications about nearby friends, drop discoveries, and connection activity
- Device type and OS version — For compatibility and debugging purposes
2. How We Use Your Information
| Data | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Location (real-time) | Show your location to friends, detect nearby friends, discover drops |
| Location (history) | Build your personal timeline, detect past encounters with friends, generate Day Film summaries |
| Phone number | Account authentication, friend matching |
| Account recovery, important account notifications | |
| Profile info | Display your identity to friends within the app |
| Content (drops, media) | Display to friends and discoverers per your visibility settings |
| Motion activity | Optimize location tracking frequency for battery efficiency |
| Device token | Deliver push notifications you have opted into |
We do not use your data for advertising, sell your data to third parties, or build advertising profiles.
3. Location Data — Special Considerations
We understand that location data is particularly sensitive. Here is how we handle it:
- Your location is only shared with friends you have accepted — never with strangers or the public.
- You control visibility — You can toggle your visibility on or off at any time, pause location tracking entirely, or set per-friend sharing levels (unrestricted, limited, or hidden).
- Hidden Zones — You can create geographic zones (e.g., home, work) where your location is automatically hidden from friends.
- Background tracking can be disabled — You can pause location tracking from your Profile or revoke location permissions in iOS Settings at any time. Some features (nearby friends, encounter detection) will not work without location access.
4. How We Share Your Information
We share your information only in the following limited circumstances:
- With your friends — Your location, profile info, drops, and connection content are visible to friends you have accepted, according to your sharing and visibility settings.
- Service providers — We use the following third-party services to operate the app:
| Provider | Purpose | Data Shared |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, authentication, file storage | All account and app data (hosted infrastructure) |
| Apple Maps API | Reverse geocoding (turning coordinates into place names) | GPS coordinates |
| OpenStreetMap / Nominatim | Fallback reverse geocoding | GPS coordinates |
| Apple Push Notification Service | Push notification delivery | Device token, notification content |
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third party.
5. Data Retention
- Account data — Retained as long as your account is active.
- Location history — Retained until you delete it (via Profile > Delete Location History) or delete your account.
- Drops — Automatically expire after the duration you set (1 hour to 7 days). Expired drops and their media are retained for recap summaries, then deleted.
- Connections and media — Retained until you or the connection owner deletes them, or until you delete your account.
- All data — Permanently deleted when you delete your account (see Section 7).
6. Data Security
- All data is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS encryption.
- Authentication uses secure one-time passcodes (OTP) — we do not store passwords in plaintext.
- Database access is controlled by row-level security (RLS) policies that ensure users can only access their own data and data shared with them by friends.
- Storage files (photos, videos) are access-controlled per user and connection membership.
- Server-side operations use scoped service keys with minimal required permissions.
7. Your Rights and Choices
You have the following rights regarding your data:
Delete Location History
You can permanently delete all your location tracking data at any time from Profile > Delete Location History. This removes all GPS data, location sessions, and visit records.
Delete Your Account
You can permanently delete your entire account and all associated data from Profile > Delete Account. This deletes:
- Your profile, username, and authentication credentials
- All location history and location sessions
- All drops, posts, and media you created
- All connections you created and media you uploaded
- All friend relationships
- All photos and videos stored on our servers
- Your device tokens and notification preferences
Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
Control Your Visibility

- Pause all location tracking (Profile > Location Tracking)
- Set per-friend sharing levels (unrestricted, limited, or hidden)
- Create Hidden Zones to auto-hide at specific locations
