Finding is mutual: your friend gets a heads-up and can open the Finder pointed back at you, so the two of you actually converge.

- It escalates through honest tiers: GPS gets you close, short-range radio gets you closer, and ultra-wideband takes the last stretch on supported iPhones.
- Distance reads approximately on purpose — we'd rather be honest than impressive.
- Finder sessions only happen between friends, in the moment, by choice. Nobody can quietly “find” you.

Yes — the Finder is a two-phone handshake between friends. That's also what makes it private: there's no finding someone who hasn't opted in.
Which iPhones get the precision view?+
Every iPhone gets the arrow and live distance. The ultra-precise final stretch uses Apple's ultra-wideband chip, on iPhone 11 and later — and newer models reach farther.
